Hey, Jeff...Wanna help me finish off my tires tomorrow? I'm pretty sure I'm bringing the Evo, and would appreciate any coaching you can give me before... Crap, if I go to Dixie Nationals, I have to find someone to take care of my cats for that weekend.

I've just about decided on the Hankook Ventus V12s for my next set of tires. I think I'll order them after I take the GRE Friday.
Then, I'll move on to the subject of tires for my Datsun...

For my Datsun, I have a set of 13"x6" Minilite wheels that need new tires. Preferably 205/60R-13. The car is a 1980 Datsun 210 wagon. It was my first autocross car. Suspension mods are cut front springs, Koni front dampers (rebuilt to be adjustable) and a rear swaybar. The alignment has positive camber, and isn't adjustable. I'd really like to make it adjustable, and have negative camber. Drivetrain mods...let's just mention the Auburn limited-slip for now. I think the rest fits the spirit of the rules for F Street Prepared. The car's original tire size is 175/70R-13. I have that on the OEM rims right now. (Treadwear 380 FTL) The Minilite rims have 205/60R-13 tires on them, and they're really, really bald. I'd really like new tires that I can leave on there for weeks at a time, and occaisonally drive up to Dothan and autocross in the cooler months (like, next month). For 205/60R-13 I've found Hoosier tires. I don't like the idea of race tires on a street car, much less one this slow. I've found Toyo R888s, which have a treadwear rating of 100. As little as I drive the car, the treadwear rating might not be a problem for me. My main concern would be how well it takes the 2-hour drive to Dothan on race day. I've also found something called a "Vredestein Sprint Classic" for vintage cars. www.tiresbyweb.com/p-9410-vredestein-sprint-classic-tires.aspxIt definitely looks like a vintage tread design, with tread going partway down the sidewall. It comes in the right size, Treadwear 220, Traction A, Temperature A. I'm tempted to buy it. I'd really like a tire suited for Street Touring, but they're not available for 13" rims. I think these vintage-type tires will have better traction than the treadwear 380 tires on my OEM rims. If someone has a reason why I shouldn't buy these generic brand vintage car tires, please tell me quickly!

You dont need power to auto cross, tires /reasonable suspension setup(for starts no positive camber)/ brakes. Concentrate on turning and stoping, those are the biggies. Top fuel dragsters generally suck at autox. By some tires that are known to grip Then drive up on stockers and swap at the autox.

buy some 14" minilite replica's and watch your tire selection expand. my advice also tends to be bad for the wallet.

You dont need power to auto cross, Easy for you to say. A Miata has about twice the power of my 1.4L pushrod motor. This Datsun was rated at 65hp when new, and I think that's optimistic. By some tires that are known to grip Then drive up on stockers and swap at the autox. I'm not swapping tires on race day. I used to, and I stopped years ago.

If your down that far on power, then you really need rcomps so you can keep the momentum up haha. If ultimate grip is not a requirment then get the cheapest ones if you hate them your not out much.

Ultimate grip is not a priority. It might even be a bad thing for this car, with 32 years of metal fatigue (and about 7 years of that included autocross, dirt roads, and other such abuse).
I'm considering the Toyos because I drive the car about once a week, and have 3 sets of wheels for it. I was hoping someone would have some experience with these tires, and could tell me how long Treadwear 100 might last on a 2200lb car. There was some race tire where someone said "It doesn't grip like Hoosier, but you can drive to the event on it." I thought the Toyos might fit that description.
I already have cheapo tires on my OEM wheels. I'm really looking for a Street Touring tire.
I really liked my Yokohama AVS Intermediates. That's what's on the 13x6 wheels right now. They're bald, and now hard because they're so far past their life expectancy. Yokohama gets boos and hisses for discontinuing that tire.
I also have 14x6 wheels (from a 280ZX) and they have Falken Azenis tires. They rub the fenders when I'm turning, because the tread circumference is too big (they're 195/60R-14).
One reason I don't care for race-tire grip is that it won't make the car competitive. There isn't a class slow enough for it. Another reason is that I will only autocross this car once or twice a year. You might see it once before I move away.

I can do a custom alignment at my shop if you really wanted one. We've done it for other customers and for my own vehicle. just bring it up to honda of panama city and give us the specs you want it to and i'll even bring you to the back of the shop and you can watch me align it.......but then i have to test drive it When I call, do I need to talk to you specifically, or do I talk to a service manager and say "I need Bill to do the alignment"? I actually have two cars needing alignments.

If you want the alignment @ Honda just come up & let them know you want custom settings. We do quite a few cars here with custom settings. Whatever you want is what we can do. Just tell them Will or Josh sent you, they"ll come & get us & we'll take care of ya!!
Oh, by the way I work @ Honda also.

I have camber bolts for the Evo, now! I decided they would be much easier and less expensive to deal with than camber plates.
Not sure what to do for alignment on the Datsun. There's no place to put a camber bolt on the front struts.

One more try... I got tires for the Evo, and they seem to grip OK. Now, the clutch is the limiting factor...
Does anyone here have experience with Avon "tyres"? I'm still looking for something for my Datsun. I need something for my 13"x6" Minilites, and Avon has a CR28 tire in 205/60R-13. It has a Treadwear rating of 160, just like my old AVS Intermediates. :-)

At 13" diameter you are not going to have many choices.
This is what I found about one of their CR28 models:
I ran Avon Tech - R tires. They wore like iron and stuck well enough for local events. They were incredibly stiff so they had very sharp turn in. However, the down side was if you over drove them they took forever to come back. So the fast way to drive them was to stay below the absolute limit. If you didn't you could loose a lot of time. Overall I liked them and I got a lot of runs for what I spent on them. Of course I have no way to tell you if this compound will even be remotely like the ones you are looking at.
